Spoilers ahead.
If youāve spent enough time in The Summer I Turned Pretty trenchesāreading the books, watching the series, and perhaps dissecting them both via TikTokāthen you should know by now that Conrad and Bellyās love story is never really over.
Itās true, Belly finally chose Team Conrad when the popular Prime Video adaptation aired its series finale in September 2025, with the soulmates finally realizing that a) Paris is indeed always a good idea, and b) theyāve always been meant for each other. But shortly after the episode dropped, creator Jenny Han (who also wrote the books from which the show is adapted) surprised fans with some exciting news: The coupleās happily-ever-after hasnāt arrived just yet. Another chapter is on the way. And, per Han, āonly a movieā will do.
The announcement arrived during a red-carpet celebration for the season 3 finale ināwhere else?āParis. Hereās what else you about the upcoming The Summer I Turned Pretty film.

According to a press release from Prime Video, the feature film will be written and directed by Han herself, and will at last āconcludeā The Summer I Turned Pretty saga. Plot details are, of course, under wraps, but Han teased in an official statement that āthere is another big milestone left in Bellyās journey.ā (Could this mean Belly has another wedding to plan? This time with a different Fisher brother...and a different ring?)
Han also spoke with Variety about the final moments of the series finale, in which Conrad and Belly return to Cousins. In this scene, Bellyās bob has grown out, indicating a time jump for the couple. When asked how big of a jump forward the movie would take, Han replied, āNo, I canāt say how far ahead it is, but it is ahead.ā
What else has Jenny Han said about the film?
In her first official statement about the film, Han said, āI thought only a movie could give [the conclusion] its proper due. Iām so grateful to Prime Video for continuing to support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans.ā

Then, in a separate interview with ELLE UK in mid-September, Han added, āIām still in the script stagesā and shared that āthe show ends as theyāre just finding their way back to each other, so the movie will offer a look more at the two of them together.ā
In December 2025, during TheWrapās 2025 Power Women Summit, Han said that the script is officially done, but production hasnāt started. ā[I] just wrote it,ā she said. āWe have not filmed anything yet.ā
Has the movie started filming?
Not yet, but soon! The movie will begin production on April 27 in Wilmington, North Carolina, Deadline revealed.
When will the movie come out?
Weāll have to wait a little bit longer for an official release date. āItās still a little too soon to say,ā Han told TODAY on Sept. 18, 2025. āBut Sarah Kucserka, who is my co-showrunner, and I have finished a draft, so weāre trudging along.ā She also added, āWe donāt know when itās coming out, but [it wonāt be] next year.ā
The author then reiterated to Variety that the movie wouldnāt be out next year. āI donāt know when it will be out, but I donāt think itās safe to say next year because we havenāt filmed it yet,ā she said. āI honestly, really want that extra time, because itās just getting the actors a little bit closer to adulthood. Weāre getting to see Belly at 15, turning 16, and then seeing her as this young woman. And now Lola is 22! I think that I always wanted some distance for the movie, so Iām really glad to get that breathing space.ā
Finally, on Oct. 6, 2025, Han busted a popular fan theory when she posted a video to her Instagram account recapping an event she co-hosted with Airbnb. In the videoās voiceover, she describes a Q&A during the event. āPeople asked me questions, like, āWhen is the movie coming out?āā she says. āAnd I told them, āNot this Christmas.āā Since the finale aired, fanshavespeculated whether the film might have a surprise Christmas 2025 release date, given that the finale credits feature photos of Belly and Conrad celebrating the holiday. (And a Christmas 2025 release would, technically, adhere to Hanās promise that the film would not come out in 2026.) But Han has repeatedly quashed that idea, and denied it once and for all in her voiceover. āI am very sorry, but Iām not lying to you guys,ā she concluded. Guess weāll just have to wait for our next Christmas in Cousins.
