Hilary Duff's husband, Matthew Koma, has been surrounded by music his entire life.

Koma — born Matthew Bair — first performed on stage at the age of 4, with his singer-songwriter dad, and he later penned his first song at 9. Following high school, he decided to pursue music full-time.

Since then, Koma has collaborated with notable names in the industry, including co-writing a Grammy-winning dance track. In addition, he's the frontman for the indie pop band Winnetka Bowling League.

Music is also how Koma met his wife, Duff, a fellow singer. The two worked on her 2015 album Breathe In. Breathe Out. Two years later, they made their red carpet debut before marrying in 2019. Today, Duff and Koma share three children together and continue making music with each other.

On Jan. 5, Koma publicly responded to an essay by Ashley Tisdale about why she decided to leave her "toxic mom group.” Tisdale kept the names of women from her former friend group anonymous in the piece, though she had previously documented her friendships with fellow celebrity moms like Duff and Mandy Moore online. However, a representative for Tisdale denied that the women were the subject of her writing in a statement to TMZ.

So, who is Hilary Duff's husband? Here's everything to know about Matthew Koma and his relationship with the fellow musician.

Koma was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in Seaford, Long Island, N.Y.

Being close to New York City was critical to Koma's developing passion for music when he was younger, as he explained in a July 2024 Alternative Press interview.

"I grew up in Long Island, and Manhattan was obviously a very close proximity to go see all levels of concerts," Koma said. "So, whether it was seeing big stadium shows or just going to clubs ... being exposed to it was just like, 'Oh, this is normal. This is what everybody does.' "

Another plus to growing up on Long Island was the "really good bagels," something he noted in a November 2017 Billboard video.

Koma is a fan of singer-songwriters like Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello and Carole King, and his love for music led him to be a songwriter himself.

According to Billboard, Koma wrote his first song, "Downtown," when he was 9 years old.

His talents run in the family: Koma's dad is Gerald Bair, a fellow musician.

"Music was always a huge part of our lives. The first time I got onstage, it was with him," Koma told USA Today in September 2012, referring to his father. "I was 4. I wore ripped jeans and a dungaree jacket. I was going through my Soul Asylum phase."

Duff and Koma originally met in 2013 while working on her album, Breathe In. Breathe Out., according to Vogue. A few years later, they made their red carpet debut in January 2017.

After dating on and off, the singers rekindled their romance for the long run and went on to welcome their first child in October 2018.

Duff and Koma then announced their engagement in May 2019, and they married in an intimate ceremony on Dec. 21, 2019.

In a December 2020 Instagram post, Koma commemorated their first anniversary with a black-and-white photo from their wedding.

"Happy Anniversary Ba ... One year ago today looked a whole lot different," he wrote. "I can't imagine this last year without you to Clorox groceries and avoid the world with. When I asked you to be my wife, we had no idea our first year would look like this."

"Thank you for being the most steady , supportive , empathetic, loving, and passionate," Koma added.

Reflecting on living through the pandemic during their first year of marriage, Koma told PEOPLE in May 2021, "It's definitely an experience that brought us closer and stronger."

They have three kids together

Koma and Duff are parents to three daughters: Banks Violet, born in October 2018; Mae James, in March 2021; and Townes Meadow in May 2024.

Duff also has a son, Luca Cruz, born in March 2012, from a previous marriage.

Koma is the frontman for the indie band Winnetka Bowling League — which also counts Koma's brother, Kris Mazzarisi, as one of its members — and they released their debut album, Sha La La, in May 2024, around the time Townes was born.

Despite being a dad, Koma said he isn't planning on writing songs about fatherhood, as he explained to PEOPLE in June 2024.

"I'm not really ready, or I don't think I'll ever be hungry to relate to an audience on fatherhood or being a great husband," he said. "Those just aren't the songs that I've ever heard and been like, 'I want to listen to that again and again,’ and I don't really care to share that part.' "

Apart from having his own band, Koma has also worked alongside major musical artists over the years.

He has written and produced for performers such as Springsteen, Shania Twain and Kelly Clarkson, among others.

Koma has collaborated with EDM and dance acts as well. He co-wrote the 2012 track, “Clarity” by Zedd, which won a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.

In addition, Koma has professionally collaborated with Duff over the years. They released a cover of Third Eye Blind's hit 1999 track "Never Let You Go" in February 2020.

More recently, the duo collaborated on the song "Mature" from the upcoming album Luck... or Something, out in February 2026.

In a blog post titled "You're Allowed to Leave Your Mom Group," Tisdale wrote about deciding to leave a "toxic mom group." Her post was later reshared on The Cut's website.

Tisdale didn't share the names of the women who belonged to her former friend group, but she was previously seen having outings with other celebrity moms, including Duff and Moore. However, Tisdale's representative denied that the women were the subjects of the piece, per TMZ.

After the story gained traction, Koma publicly responded to Tisdale's essay on his Instagram Stories, where he photoshopped himself onto the actress' body, recreating The Cut image of her, and adding a fictional The Cut logo and headline to the picture.

"When You're The Most Self Obsessed Tone Deaf Person On Earth, Other Moms Tend To Shift Focus To Their Actual Toddlers," read the headline "A Mom Group Tell All Through A Father's Eyes."

Koma captioned it, "Read my new interview with @TheCut."
