Scott Turner Schofield is opening up about his past — the good, the bad and the funny.

The actor and activist reflects on more than 20 years of life as a trans man during an increasingly fraught moment in history in his new film, Becoming a Man in 127 EASY Steps. The film, available to stream on Jan. 27, is a collection of 127 stories spanning Schofield’s life before, during and after his gender transition.

ā€œThis is the way that I could be of service,ā€ Schofield, the first out trans man to earn an Emmy nomination for acting, tells PEOPLE of making the film. ā€œI transitioned as a teenager 25 years ago in the South, which is not that long ago. But in terms of what has happened in our culture, it’s so far away. As an actor, I have a gift of being able to express myself in a way that a lot of people can’t, or aren’t safe to, and I take that very seriously as one story that represents many.ā€

This isn’t Schofield’s first time putting himself in the public eye. The first openly trans actor to appear on daytime television on The Bold and the Beautiful, Schofield has also consulted on major shows like Euphoria. He says he is used to, and prepared for, the responsibility of making trans voices heard. ā€œBack 20 years ago, when I started, I had to create a one-man show for theater because I couldn’t even get cast in theater productions because I was trans,ā€ he explains.

He adds, ā€œI started telling my trans story first as a way to be able to be an actor and perform, but also because I wasn’t seeing those stories in very many places. Ten years ago, there was this mini boom that I was really fortunate to be a part of. Now we’re back in a place where it’s like, ā€˜Well, if you want to see yourself, you’re going to have to make it yourself.’ I know how to do that — and I know how to help other people do it as well.ā€

Sharing his story on a large scale during a time marked by an influx of anti-trans rhetoric is not something Schofield takes lightly. ā€œI’m really sad to say that this is the scariest moment in history to be trans,ā€ he says. ā€œNobody reading this hasn’t seen a headline that makes our lives look outrageous or sad or difficult.ā€

ā€œEven though releasing a movie about my life as a trans person makes me more visible — and therefore more of a target right now — sharing a story that depicts a full and long life with nuance, dignity and humor feels like the most powerful way I could possibly be of assistance. They want to make us feel unworthy, slow us down, but being trans means you have to be resilient.ā€

Despite the fear facing the trans community, Schofield remains hopeful. ā€œI’m just one trans person that is a feature of the trans community, and I’m really hopeful,ā€ he says. ā€œThe more we see what’s happening to us, the stronger we show up in the world, and that’s not going to stop. You can’t erase us. I do believe there will be a next wave of transgender representation, and I’m really looking forward to us having control over how we tell our stories.ā€

Schofield hopes his film resonates not only with the trans community but with audiences beyond it as well. ā€œI hope people get to spend an hour feeling like they’ve been in a really welcoming and accessible conversation with a trans person,ā€ he says. ā€œEvery trans person is changing the world around them all the time, because anyone who meets a trans person has to shift their ideas about stereotypes or beliefs about what a person can be. That’s powerful.ā€

Becoming a Man in 127 EASY Steps is available to stream on Kinema beginning Jan. 27.
