The eighth and final season premieres on March 6 on Starz

Filming on the final season of Outlander may be complete, but Sam Heughan and the rest of the show's stars aren't 100 percent sure how the time travel series will end.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE to discuss his new book, The Cocktail Diaries, Heughan, 45, opened up about what fans can expect in season 8 of Outlander. More than a decade after its premiere in 2014, the epic time travel romance series is coming to an end. However, the actor admits that even he's not entirely sure what will happen to his character, Jamie Fraser, and his wife, Claire (CaitrĂona Balfe), as their centuries-spanning love story comes to a close.

"We don't really know how it ends," he tells PEOPLE. "We kind of know, but we shall see in the edit ourselves."

Despite not knowing what the final product will look like, Heughan does offer a tease of what viewers can expect in season 8 in three powerful words: "Reconciliation
 war and eternity."

More than anything, the author and actor hopes viewers will "look back on" the series "and see it being an amazing adventure that they've gone on with us and perhaps, I don't know, go back to season 1 and start watching from the beginning again."

He adds, "I hope they feel we have done justice to the characters and to the story and to the fans. You know, it's hard. How do you finish a show like that? Obviously, we didn't finish the books. We had to finish our show, so it is a departure from the books in some ways, but for us, it was rewarding, and we wanted to finish it right."

Outlander is based on Diana Gabaldon's book series, which began in 1991 and is still in progress. The author has yet to publish the final installment in Claire and Jamie's story, which means the show will present an ending of its own.

For now, Heughan and the rest of the show's cast are focusing on saying goodbye to their characters and honoring the journey they've gone on together over the past decade. In his cocktail book, the Couple Next Door actor included a special Appletini recipe he made for the Outlander wrap party he hosted at his home in Scotland.

"They all like a tipple," Heughan says of his costars. "But also yeah, it just felt nice to create something, you know, from my garden. It was a really nice moment to share with everyone that I have been working with — it was cast and crew that were there, and just to, you know, [celebrate] an amazing journey we've all been on for the past 11 years. So it felt good. We did finish the bottle that I created and had many other cocktails as well."

Outlander season 8 premieres on March 6 on Starz. The first seven seasons of Outlander are available to stream on the Starz platform. In addition, the first six seasons can be watched on Netflix.
