The Sundance Film Festival has become potent fodder for political dialogue this week, as several high-profile actors use the event to protest President Trump's ongoing Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Minnesota.
Stars like Olivia Wilde and Natalie Portman spoke out at the famed film festival in Utah against the killing of protester Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents, the second high-profile, immigration officer-involved shooting in Minneapolis this month. In early January, ICE agents shot and killed Renee Good. In both instances, the Trump administration has characterized the shootings as an act of self-defense, while local authorities have pointed to video evidence that appears to contradict that narrative.
"What's going on in this country right now is absolutely horrific," Portman, 44, said at the festival, per Deadline. "What the federal government, Trump's government, Kristi Noem, ICE – what they're doing is really the worst of the worst of humanity."

USA TODAY has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment.
Portman highlighted "the best of humanity" in "the way people are showing up for each other in community, and Americans showing up to support each other and protect each other and fight against injustice."
"I could not be prouder to be American right now by the way the Americans are acting, and I could not be sadder to be American with the way the government (is) behaving," Portman said.
Wilde, echoing that sentiment. In an interview with Variety the actress said: "We're all here getting to celebrate something really beautiful and hopeful in film storytelling. But the world is hurting right now, and this country is hurting. And it's appalling."

She said, "We can't go another day just sort of accepting this as our new norm. It's outrageous. People are being murdered. And I don't want to normalize seeing people being murdered on the internet on film," referring to the deaths of Pretti and Good, both of which were caught on camera by bystanders. "It's hideous. And so if we can do anything out here to support the movement to cast ICE out, to delegitimize this unbelievably criminal organization, then that’s what we should be doing."
Pretti's death has sparked outrage and protests in Minnesota. The state's attorney general, Keith Ellison, said law enforcement in the state is carrying out a "full, impartial, and transparent" investigation into his death.
