Warning: This story contains spoilers for Stranger Things season 5, Volume 2.

Noah Schnapp and Millie Bobby Brown have grown very close offscreen ever since they met on the set of Stranger Things in 2015

But their characters, Will (Schnapp) and Eleven (Brown), don't have as tight of a bond in the show

The actor opens up to PEOPLE about the rare times the real-life BFFs get to work together in a scene

Noah Schnapp has just one bone to pick with the Stranger Things co-creators, Matt and Ross Duffer.

The actor and his costar Millie Bobby Brown, both 21, have been thick as thieves ever since they met on the set of Stranger Things in 2015, but the pair don't have as many on-camera scenes together as Schnapp, who plays Will Byers, would like.

"It's so annoying," Schnapp tells PEOPLE of how few and far between his scenes with Eleven (Brown) are in the series. It's a topic he loves to talk about.

He did have a rare moment with her in Volume 2 of season 5, when Eleven rescued Will from Vecna's clutches and brought him back to Hawkins — where he was able to get a warning out just in time for Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) to save Max (Sadie Sink) from the demodogs sent to kill her.

"I was looking forward to that [scene], that little moment, all year," Schnapp says. "Because we never get to work together, so the little moments we do have onscreen, it's the best day ever."

He says working with Brown, is "so fun," "comfortable" and "easy" because of their real-life rapport.

"That's what's so important in this job, is to feel comfortable to be vulnerable, and with her, it's just so much easier," Schnapp says. "And she's so talented. So double the joy."

In season 5, Eleven and Will have a newfound kinship after Will realized in Volume 1 that he can channel his connection to the Hive Mind to use Vecna's powers against him.

"I think Eleven and Will are just tied together in so many ways and such similar characters," Schnapp says. "So I love getting to see them on screen together and getting to work with Millie."

At the season 5 premiere in Los Angeles, Schnapp called Brown "my best friend for life" as he reflected on the bonds he and his castmates have developed over the near-decade they spent on the show.

ā€œMillie is my best friend for life, but they all truly are just family to me, and it shows on screen," he told PEOPLE on the red carpet. "I mean, thank God we're so close.ā€

ā€œIt's a show at its core about friendship and connection and belonging and embracing your differences, and it just makes you feel a part of something,ā€ he said.

ā€œIt makes you feel empowered to be proud, to be different and proud to be who you are. I love that about it, and I think that's why others do as well.ā€

He's also godfather to Brown's daughter, whom she adopted this summer with her husband, Jake Bongiovi.

"Sadie is very, very maternal, but Noah's her godfather," she told Entertainment Tonight of Schnapp and their costar Sadie Sink. "They all turn into the most gooey, soft versions of themselves [and] their baby voice comes out when they're around her."

He said it's "such an honor" to be so involved in Brown's daughter's life.

"It’s crazy because we’ve grown up together, and we’d talk. When we were little kids, she was like, ā€˜When I have a kid, you’re definitely going to be the godfather to my kid,’" Schnapp said on The View. "Then we grew up, she had a kid, and now I am."

Volumes 1 and 2 of Stranger Things season 5 are streaming now on Netflix. The finale drops Dec. 31 at 8 p.m. ET.
