Cyrus also teased a reprisal of her role as Hannah Montana at the star-studded festival

Is Miley Cyrus returning to acting?

The 33-year-old musician, who first rose to fame through her role as the titular superstar in Hannah Montana, has been on a hiatus of sorts from acting, with her last major role coming in a 2019 Black Mirror episode. But she would be more than happy to revisit the art form, she recently told The Hollywood Reporter.

While walking the red carpet at the 37th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival on Saturday, Jan. 3, Cyrus told the outlet that she would “love to” hone her acting skills once more.

At the star-studded festival — where she took home the Outstanding Artistic Achievement Award for her new Avatar: Fire and Ash ballad, “Dream as One” — Cyrus also told THR that she hoped to join forces with one of the creatives in attendance.

“I hope some brilliant mind in here has the right thing for me,” said the “Flowers” singer. “Let’s see. Remind them. If someone genius comes by, be like, ‘Hey, Miley is here.’ ”

As for what she would like to do in particular, the star revealed that she wants to be part of someone else’s vision.

“Just tell them, ‘What do they want me to do?’ I would love to go into someone else’s world,” Cyrus told THR. “I’m the boss in my own world.”

The singer’s last major onscreen role — much like her first — was a pop star (Ashley O) in a Black Mirror season 5 episode that arrived in the summer of 2019. She has since made other cameos and minor appearances, including a small (and trippy) role in 2024’s Drive-Away Dolls.

Cyrus’s major credits include animated movie Bolt (2008) and romance films LOL (2012) and The Last Song (2010), which she starred in alongside her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.

She is most closely associated, however, with her role as Miley Stewart, a teenager living a double life as a pop star named Hannah Montana, in the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana. The show debuted in 2006 and ran for four seasons, and spawned a 2009 film, Hannah Montana: The Movie.

Also at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Cyrus teased a potential return to the beloved, wig-wearing character.

Asked if she had any anniversary plans for the series, the star told Variety, “Absolutely. We're working hard on them.” And, when pushed for more information, she playfully replied, "I can't tell you.”

She did, however, tease, "You see the bangs," referring to the Disney character’s signature on-stage hairstyle.

Though Cyrus has not taken on any major onscreen roles in recent years, she did appear on the big screen in 2025 when her visual album Something Beautiful, which premiered on June 6 at the Tribeca Film Festival, and arrived in theaters shortly after.
