On October 29, Hank Northrop, the son of soap opera legends Wayne Northrop and Lynn Herring, made his Days of Our Lives debut as Liam Selejko. In a recent interview, the actor offered insight into what viewers can expect next from his new character.

Northrop appeared on The Locher Room, the Youtube interview series hosted by former soap opera publicist Alan Locher, where he spoke openly about growing up as a second-generation soap actor and reflecting on the recent passing of his father, Wayne Northrop.

During the conversation, Northrop addressed Liam's early story arc, acknowledging that the character's introduction has unfolded gradually.

Northrop explained that the measured introduction was intentional. “Sometimes you throw a character down the throats of people and they get sick of them right away,” he said. “Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t but this is great. It’s a slow build, slow burn, it gives them a lot of runway.”

He added that Liam’s early mystery is part of the appeal. “It’s kind of like, ‘What this guys deal?’” Northrop said. “It builds a little intrigue and honestly there’s a lot to look forward to with him, from a fan perspective.”

Northrop also emphasized his goal of giving Liam depth. “He’s not one note,” he said. “My big thing I wanted to do was to not make him just this one note, angsty, smoldering bad boy," he said. “That was the last thing I wanted to do. I wanted to make him a full human. I wanted to layer it with humor; I wanted to layer my performance with kindness. Intelligence sometimes, but in different ways.”

Looking ahead, Northrop said he’s excited for viewers to spend more time with Liam. “So, for me, it’s just going to be exciting when he starts ramping up. When the fans really start to relate to him more and see what he’s all about. It’s going to be fun I think. There’s a lot of growth and kind-of unexpected things to come.”

Days of Our Lives streams weekdays on Peacock.
