As longtime fans can attest, chart-topping hard rock band The Darkness is known for their sense of humor — particularly charismatic frontman Justin Hawkins. But when the singer and his bandmate and brother, Dan Hawkins, sat down with BBC Breakfast on Tuesday, Jan. 9, to promote their take on the Christmas classic "Mistletoe and Wine," it seemed like their interviewers weren't in on the joke.

Justin took to Instagram following the broadcast to share screenshots of The Mirror's coverage of the televised exchange, which reported that regular viewers of the program called the segment "excruciating" and a "car crash."

"Nailed it," he wrote in his caption.

Fans were quick to come to the Hawkins brothers' defense, with one writing, "We thought it was hilarious! The fact they hadn’t bothered to research who was who says it all."

"It was so hilarious and so cringe! The interviewers were dreadful, no idea they were having the pee extracted haha," a second commenter observed.

“'I’m Justin by the way' says it all I think," a third person agreed, with another saying, "They are the most awkward interviewers ever them two."

"This sounds like a disaster...I'm so proud," somebody raved.

"Suffolk humor bypassing the masses again. Love it," quipped someone else, as yet another declared, "Stuff like this, is exactly why we love you!!"

Indeed, Justin and his unique sense of humor have always been a draw for fans of The Darkness, who released their eighth studio album, Dreams on Toast, earlier this year before heading out on tour. In fact, the singer even hosts a popular podcast on YouTube, Justin Hawkins Rides Again, and will be touring the U.K. with his one-man show later this year.

The Darkness had a huge hit in 2003 with "I Believe in a Thing Called Love," which Taylor Swiftlater danced to in a 2016 Apple ad. The song got a streaming boost in 2024 when Swift was seen singing along at the US Open with Travis Kelce.

As Justin quipped in an interview with Parade earlier this year, “If you grow tired of that song, you grow tired of life.”

Hawkins went on to praise Swift, saying, "I really admire her as a individual."

“My daughter’s a huge fan…I think she’s been really kind to us over the years," he added.

One thing's for sure: The Darkness will always have their fans on their side.
