Erin Napier got candid about age and noticing changes in her appearance in a Jan. 12 Instagram post

She reflected on the topic after watching herself in this week’s new episode of Home Town, the fan-favorite home renovation show she hosts alongside her husband Ben

ā€œI have been on TV for a decade now, and years ago I cared more what the viewer might think,ā€ she wrote in the caption

Erin Napier is sharing her reaction to watching herself on this week’s episode of Home Town in a vulnerable social media post.

The HGTV star, 40, got candid about the topic of aging and reflected on what's changed after being on TV for ā€œa decade nowā€ in a Jan. 12 Instagram post. Her message comes after Sunday’s new episode of the home renovation show she stars on with her husband, Ben Napier.

ā€œI watched last night’s episode for the first time just like y’all do. Last night, as I watched I noticed the way age is changing me,ā€ Erin begins in the caption.

She continues, ā€œI noticed my hair, half wavy, half flat, evidence of abandoning my hair styling at the 4 minute mark because I would rather make pancakes for the girls before leaving for work instead of staring at myself in the mirror worrying what you, viewer, might feel about the way I look.ā€

Erin adds that while she ā€œnoticedā€ changes in her appearance as she watched the episode, what matters to her most is how she’s showing up for her and Ben’s daughters, she says.

ā€œAnd I noticed my arms, that used to be thinner, and I smiled at the thought of how Mae mutters that I am ā€˜the softest mommy in the world’ when she pushes her face into me as she falls asleep,ā€ she says of her 4-year-old daughter. She also shares daughter Helen, 7, with Ben.

She begins to wrap up her message by stating frankly that she doesn’t care as much about what people think of her appearance as much after years of being on camera.

ā€œI have been on TV for a decade now, and years ago I cared more what the viewer might think,ā€ the mom of two explains. ā€œOh but these days I’m the softest mommy, who makes the pancakes and wrinkles up my forehead worrying if we did enough reading today.ā€

ā€œI have decided it’s delicious and comforting to be rebellious about our vanity,ā€ Erin concludes. ā€œWe can’t care about everything, mamas!ā€

This isn’t the first time Erin has reflected on the topic of getting older.

Ahead of her 40th birthday this past August, Erin opened up about deciding not to care about her ā€œforehead wrinklesā€ as her milestone birthday approached.

ā€œY’all, are we out here caring about forehead wrinkles? I’m turning 40 this month and I think… we should all decide we don’t care,ā€ she wrote on her Instagram Stories Aug. 4, alongside a smiley face emoji.

Erin’s caption was written over a close-up selfie of her face, seemingly without any filters and minimal or no makeup.

ā€œWe started homeschooling,ā€ Ben previously told PEOPLE. ā€œThe kids. And we’re doing it. [Every time] when we say it, people are like, ā€˜Oh, did you hire a tutor?’ And we’re like, ā€˜No, we’re the tutors.ā€™ā€

ā€œHomeschooling. It’s not a non-negotiable, it’s what we’re trying this year," Erin added. "But they’ve never had devices, they’ve never held phones or tablets or iPads. We’re trying to live like it’s our childhood again."
