Caitríona Balfe tells PEOPLE which sentimental items she took from the Outlander set, while chatting at the season 8 premiere in New York City
Balfe, who plays Claire Fraser, says she “burst into tears” filming the show’s last episode
The eighth and final season of ‘Outlander’ is airing now on Starz. New episodes drop Fridays
As Outlander comes to an end, Caitríona Balfe is revealing which items she swiped from set.
The Irish actress opened up about Outlander’s final chapter while speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the season 8 premiere in New York City on Monday, March 2.
"I burst into tears," she admits when asked about filming the final scenes of the series. "That moment was very, very emotional."
As a way to remember her 12 years on the hit Starz series as Claire Fraser, Balfe, 46, confessed that she wanted items from Claire's jewelry collection.
“I got my rings,” Balfe tells PEOPLE. “I had a lot of weddings. I had a lot of marriages. I deserved the hardware.”
Balfe isn’t the only cast member to sneak items from set. Her costar Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser) tells PEOPLE he’s taken “a lot over the seasons," while Izzy Meikle-Small (who plays Rachel Hunter) says she snatched one of Rachel’s many scarves.
John Bell (Ian Fraser Murray) says he grabbed Ian’s bow and arrows, while Charles Vandervaart (William Ransom) took home one of the prop swords.

Balfe spoke of Claire’s ring collection in an interview with Only Natural Diamonds magazine.
"Claire has been collecting wedding rings, with her husbands," she said. "She had two different wedding bands from Jamie. Both of which are very, very special to her. She always still wore Frank’s wedding ring, and then, Lord John gave her a wedding ring, too, but she didn’t wear that so much. That was sort of. We just sort of forget that that happened."

Balfe told the outlet that saying goodbye to the show feels “bittersweet.”
"A decade on something is probably a good chunk of time," she said. "But because it was that long, it was my life. It was a quarter of my life when we ended, that I’d been on that show. The relationships were so deep and strong."
She continued, "But to that point, they are the things that will continue on afterwards. It was so special to be part of something so beautiful and something that touched so many people’s lives. I think that’s one of the greatest things that is still happening all the time now, where you meet people and they say, 'Oh, it was part of our life for this reason or that reason.' And that’s so special to be part of something that does that."

Outlander is a time travel show adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s book series, which began in 1991 and is not yet complete. Gabaldon announced that the 10th book in the series, A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out, would be the last, but no details about its release have been confirmed.
Given that Gabaldon is "still writing," the TV show has "diverged from the books more," Balfe told PEOPLE, adding that she “had no idea what was going to happen” in the show’s eighth season.
"It wasn't clear where [showrunner] Matt [Roberts] was going to take the story, and I wouldn't have wanted to have had his job, because that's a really tough job to have, because everyone has opinions," Balfe continues. "And I think every single person wants their character to have their moment, so it would be hard to listen to everybody. So he kept his cards very close to his chest, which I totally understand."
In season 8, Jamie (Heughan) and Claire find that "the war has followed them home to Fraser’s Ridge, now a thriving settlement that has grown and flourished in their absence," per the official synopsis. "With new arrivals and changes made during their years away, the Frasers are confronted with the question of what they are willing to sacrifice for the place they call home and, more importantly, what they would sacrifice to stay together."
"While the Frasers keep a united front against outside intruders, family secrets finally coming to light threaten to tear them apart from the inside," the synopsis continues. "Although they’ve left the war for America’s freedom behind, their fight for Fraser’s Ridge has only just begun."
New episodes of Outlander air Fridays on Starz.
