The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot has been canceled, Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed in an Instagram video on March 14
"I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward," the actress said

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is no more.
Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed that the planned project — which would come over two decades after Buffy's final bow — has been axed.
"So, I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me," the actress, 48, said in an Instagram video shared on Saturday, March 14.
"Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale," she continued, referring to the streamer, which backed the series, and the title for the reboot.

Thanking Chloé Zhao, who was directing the project, Gellar then said, "I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy's stylish yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her, and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn't change any of that."
Gellar closed her candid message, stating, "And I promise, if the apocalypse actually comes, you could still beep me" — making a reference to a fan-favorite quote her character, Buffy Summers, said in the show. (She also captioned the Instagram video with the same line.)

Buffy aired for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003 and was followed by Angel, a spinoff series, which ran from 1999 to 2004.
Alyson Hannigan, Anthony Head, David Boreanaz, Nicholas Brendon, James Marsters, Eliza Dushku and Seth Green were among others in the main Buffy cast, as well as Michelle Tractenberg, who died at the age of 39 in 2025.

The reboot was set to focus on a new slayer, with Gellar appearing in a recurring role and serving as an executive producer.
Zhao, 43, a noted fan of the original series, was also executive producing, while Nora and Lila Zuckerman were attached to write, showrun and executive produce. Dolly Parton, who was an uncredited producer on the hit '90s show through her company Sandollar Entertainment, was also serving as an executive producer.

Gellar was photographed on the set of the reboot in Los Angeles back in August. At the time, she filmed in a bright red, long-sleeved dress.
Speaking exclusively with PEOPLE in March 2025, Gellar said she was "excited" about "the idea and the group behind" the Buffy reboot series.
"There was no world where I thought Chloé Zhao was going to call me and partner with me, and ask my advice on things and my opinion — especially because she hasn't done television," the Ready or Not 2: Here I Come star said at the time.
"She'll call me, and she'll say, 'Well, I have to defer to you,' and I'm like, 'Wait, what?' Those aren't words I ever thought I would hear," she added.
