Ashton Kutcher has opened up about a painful experience from his early modeling career, revealing that renowned fashion designer Tom Ford once fired him from a prestigious Gucci campaign because he appeared “too fat” in a Speedo.

The 47-year-old actor made the surprising revelation during a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, via EW, while promoting his new FX series, The Beauty. Kutcher recalled that he was booked for an exclusive campaign when Ford was running the luxury fashion house.

The incident occurred when Kutcher was just 19 years old and starting his modeling career. He flew to Italy for the runway show, where Ford placed him in a pink Speedo. The moment marked a turning point in his understanding of the fashion industry’s exacting standards.

“He puts me in, like, a pink Speedo. I was 178 pounds. I know exactly how much I weighed: 178 pounds. He was like, ‘He’s too fat,’ and I got fired,” Kutcher admitted during the interview. The actor’s weight, which he remembered with striking precision, became a point of contention, even though it was within a healthy range for his height.

Despite the rejection, Kutcher maintains no ill will toward the fashion icon. The star emphasized that Ford “had a specific thing he wanted to see,” acknowledging the designer’s creative vision for the campaign. The two have since developed a sense of humor about the situation.

“I laugh with him about it now. He’s like, ‘You were too fat.’ I was like, dude, I was 178 pounds, what are you talking about?” Kutcher shared with a laugh. The actor has gained perspective on the experience over the years, understanding it wasn’t a personal judgment of his worth.

“But, he had a specific thing he wanted to see, that in his eye was the right thing. It didn’t mean I was less, it just meant that I wasn’t that for him, for that moment,” Kutcher explained. His mature reflection demonstrates how he’s processed the rejection without internalizing it as a personal failure.

The revelation comes as Kutcher promotes The Beauty, a new series exploring society’s obsession with physical perfection. The show follows characters who use a transformative substance in pursuit of ideal appearances, with Kutcher playing a tech billionaire behind the controversial drug.

During the same interview, Kutcher discussed how insecurities affect everyone, regardless of their appearance. “It doesn’t matter who you are or what you look like. I started modeling when I was 19. I was hanging out with what I considered to be some of the most beautiful people in the world. What I realized really quickly was that everybody had an insecurity. Everybody,” he told Entertainment Tonight.

“You look in the mirror long enough, you’ll find something you don’t like, or that you think could be better, or you think could be different,” the actor added, connecting his personal experience to broader themes explored in his new series.

The Beauty, created by Ryan Murphy and Matt Hodgson, debuts on January 21 on FX and Hulu via Disney+. The series stars Kutcher alongside Evan Peters, Bella Hadid, Rebecca Hall, Jeremy Pope, and Anthony Ramos.

Tom Ford served as Gucci’s Creative Director from 1994 to 2004, a period widely regarded as transformative for the Italian luxury brand. During his tenure, Ford’s provocative campaigns and boundary-pushing designs helped revitalize the fashion house and cement his status as one of the industry’s most influential designers.

Gucci did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding Kutcher’s recollection of the incident.
