Andrew Garfield may be frequently fancast as Remus Lupin, but the actor has no interest in joining the Harry Potter universe.
Speaking on Hits Radio’s My Life in Movies series, the Oscar nominee spoke about watching the franchise for the first time recently. However, he admitted he wasn’t sure about where the series stands culturally, amid author J.K. Rowling’s transphobia. While he praised the material, he struggled to separate the art from the artist.
The actor had praise for the Harry Potter stars
“I hadn’t watched the Harry Potters until recently,” Andrew confessed during the interview. This may come as a major shock for fans of the franchise, as the star has been fancast as iconic character Remus Lupin in an imagined prequel series since the beginning of his career, two decades ago.
Andrew went on to praise fellow British actor Daniel Radcliffe, who starred as the titular character in the series. “[Daniel is] really good in those Harry Potter movies,” he added. “Those Harry Potter movies were really good.”

However, Andrew, a vocal supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, cited mixed feelings about his recent watch of the franchise. “I know it’s like controversial. And like, we shouldn’t be — you know — putting money in the pocket of inhumane legislation right now through she that shall remain nameless.”
The nameless woman is almost certainly J.K., who has used her social media and writing in recent years to push transphobic rhetoric. The author also donated millions to anti-trans groups, who helped bring in the UK Supreme Court ruling that a “woman” is legally defined as assigned female at birth.
Later, Andrew stated that despite J.K.’s peddling of hatred and division, he believes the themes of her books, somewhat ironically, still hold up, even contradicting her current views. “The soul and the spirit of a lot of the essence of the themes of those films,” Andrew said, “and the kids are so good.”
